Prologue

To my readers, I apologize for not getting this out sooner, but better late than never.
The story takes place in current times.
So the setting for the Native American Tribe-lands is upstate New York in mostly wooded areas. This area is not modernized, there isn't electricity, they do have running water though.
The rest of the world though is modernized just like present day and has various settings from the country to the desert.
The Native people though are trying to maintain their roots and behave much like they would have during the days of the Mayflower. However I have given this story my own interpretation and like I have already stated, much of what goes on in the Tribe and Clans is purely from my imagination and not from actual happenings or even culturally correct.

Chapter 5- Beginnings

Dakota was off spending time with someone he had met briefly at the wedding ceremony and every morning since while hunting. Her name was Aiyana, and she was the most beautiful creature he had ever laid eyes on. This morning they chose to fish at his favorite fishing place, it was secluded and seemed cut off from the rest of the world.
Aiyana wasn't tied to a clan, she lived in the woods alone. Her mother had moved into the wilderness with her when she was very young because a man had come after them while she was gathering roots and berries. Her mother had been very afraid and hadn't wanted to cause trouble for the Clan, so she left, or at least that's what she had told Aiyana. Aiyana's mother was gone now though, so Aiyana was alone, lonely and curious about life outside the woods. She had stumbled across the ceremony quite by accident but had been drawn out of the shadows by Dakota's handsome looks and chiseled body.
Since meeting Aiyana, Dakota had thought of no one else, he hadn't even wanted to touch his wife. He thanked the Creator that she was pregnant because that was the excuse he gave to Nokomis, I don't want to hurt the baby. Aiyana haunted his dreams at night and his thoughts during the day. He longed to touch her and kiss her soft lips. He yearned to know what she tasted like.
All too soon though it was time for him to go, he knew if he waited too long Claire would have a search party out, not that she would be able to find them.
"Same time tomorrow?" asked Dakota.
"Sounds great!" said Aiyana.
Aiyana stood there not moving, like she had something on her mind. So Dakota walked back up to her.
"Is there something wrong Aiyana?"
"No and yes" was her response.
"What do you mean?" asked Dakota
"Dakota, I love spending time with you, but you have a wife and a baby on the way. I feel wrong for wanting you the way I that I do."
Dakota smiled, "Aiyana, as soon as I have one of the vacant villages up and able to live in, I will make you an official Chief's mistress, that is, if you want to be."
Aiyana had no words to express how she felt, instead she wrapped her arms him and looked into his eyes. Aiyana was unsure on how to proceed from this point, but she really wanted to kiss him. Dakota however had no qualms and leaned in, closed his eyes and let his lips gently meet hers. Her lips seemed to melt against his, he used his tongue to part her lips so he could taste her and she gingerly did the same following his lead. Their tongues seemed to be dancing, he couldn't get enough of her. He had the sudden urge to take her then and there, but he restrained himself even as he felt her reaching under his shirt to feel his back muscles. He wanted to feel her too, but he knew it would go much further and he wanted her first time to be special.
When Aiyana realized it wasn't going any further, she tried to hide her frustration. She wanted him NOW! But Dakota gently pulled away and told her to be patient.
"Soon" he said. "Soon we'll be able to make love all night and all day if you want."
Aiyana smiled a giddy smile and said OK.
Dakota then had a brilliant idea....
"Do you want to help me get the village ready? We could start tomorrow, it would get done a lot quicker with both of us working on it. Then you could set it up how you want it too."
"That sounds like a great idea!" Aiyana said excitedly. She couldn't wait.
"Okay, I'll meet you here tomorrow morning at dawn and we'll head over."
"Sounds good, good night Dakota."
"Goodnight Aiyana"
Dakota wanted so badly to be married to Aiyana instead of Nokomis, but he wasn't so he was just going to have to be happy with her as a mistress.

Dakota had barely made it within the village when Claire found him. Claire eyed him suspiciously.
"Where were you?" she asked.
"Fishing" said Dakota.
"With who?"
"A friend" answered Dakota, at that moment he realized he was giving one word answers, if he wanted to keep Aiyana a secret for much longer he was going to need longer answers and quickly.
"Does your friend have a name?" asked Claire.
"Aiyana" he said without thinking, well there goes that idea he said to himself.
"Aiyana? Have I met her?"
"No, not yet, we're going to work on the one of the villages tomorrow." Sure now he was giving longer answers, he thought.
"Really? So you've chosen her to be one of your mistresses?"
"Yes Claire, I'm sorry. I should have consulted with you first." Dakota said.
"It's okay Dakota, I trust your judgment. You are Chief after all. Since we're on the subject of villages and mistresses, I must tell you that we have two new women. Well, a teen and a shaman to-be."
"Where did they come from? How did they get here?" Dakota asked.
"One of the Elders form the Tribal Counsel brought them, their village was burnt down and they were the only known survivors." explained Claire.
"No men? I find that hard to believe." said Dakota.
"Well, you could talk to them and find out what happened. I agree there does seem to be something missing from the story." said Claire.
"I'll try" said Dakota. "In the meantime though I need you to find another Shaman for Aiyana, she'll need someone to help her when she gives birth."
"Is she pregnant already?" asked Claire.
"No, but it probably won't take long." said Dakota smiling.
"Oh okay", said Claire. "I'll get started right away."

Chapter 4

Changes-
Claire prepared all day for the ceremony that would happen in just a few hours, she found pretty white flowers for Nokomis' hair and white rose petals for around the fire ring. Earlier that morning she had gone to send word to the Elders of the Tribal Counsel, a invitation was mandatory, not that any of them would attend, but to not invite them would make the ceremony null and void. On the way back she had found the flowers along with wild berries, vegetables and other fruits.
Dakota had gone hunting earlier and was now cooking his kill for the feast that would follow. Dakota was nervous and excited to begin the next chapter of his life.
Nokomis being pregnant tried to help as best she could, so Claire sent her to invite fellow Tribe members from nearby villages.
At last the hour came and a few fellow Tribe members came, but no one they knew. Dakota was betting most would show up after the ceremony for the food.
Dakota stood across from Nokomis, and Claire stood between them. Nokomis took Dakota's breath away as he looked at the woman he was marrying, she looked like an angel. They exchanged vows in their native tongue and gave thanks to the Creator for having their paths cross and now intertwine. The kissed and Claire pronounced them Husband and Wife.
Then the feast began, and as Dakota had predicted more people showed up, even some that he knew. There was a lot of eating for everyone and a lot of drinking for the men. Nokomis tried to be as entertaining as possible but quickly became tired, the other women understood, after all Nokomis was growing a baby, so they went to call their men home. There was however quite a few men not attached as well as women who weren't attached. Nokomis had seen quite a few women eyeball her husband, but Dakota seemed not to notice them at all, he was having fun with some old friends he hadn't seen since boyhood.

A month or so later, Nokomis realized that life after the ceremony was much the same as life before the ceremony. Nokomis wasn't sure what she had expected to be honest, but she had thought that it would be different. The only difference to her was her title, wife. Hopefully, she would start to feel a sense of purpose when the baby came.

Arrivals-
Months went by, summer was almost over, the leaves on the trees were just starting to change colors.
Claire was tending to the garden when one of the Elders from the Tribal Counsel appeared, he was followed by two women.
"Is your Chief around?" the Elder asked Claire.
"He's hunting in the forest nearby I believe" Claire replied.
"We are looking for a Clan to take in these two women, their village was burned by a wildfire and they are the only survivors that we know of. We figured since your Clan has lost some of its members recently that you would have room. The woman next to me is Dyani, a young Shaman to-be, and the girl behind her is Nita." explained the Elder.
Claire thought carefully, usually the Chief's wife would make this decision, but Nokomis hadn't really come into her role yet. They had plenty of room, but more importantly Claire saw potential for the Clan.
"I'm sure that Chief Dakota would be more than happy to help" answered Claire.
"Thank you Shaman, well I'll leave you ladies to get accustomed to your new Clan." and with that the Elder left.
Claire introduced herself, and asked them to follow to her to meet the Chief's wife, Nokomis. Both Dyani and Nita were very shy and didn't say a word, just nodded in agreement has they held hands and followed Claire.
Nokomis was sitting on a log by the campfire roasting some fruit, as Claire and the newcomers walked up. Nokomis looked at Claire with a puzzled expression.
"Nokomis, this is Nita and Dyani, they were brought here to join our Clan, their village burned down and they are the only survivors." Claire said.
"Oh my, I'm so sorry. I myself came from a different village, but don't worry Claire and Chief Dakota are very friendly and easy going. Are you hungry? I have a bunch of fruit already grilled."
Both women nodded yes that they were indeed very hungry. So Nokomis passed the plate of fruit to them and told them to eat until they were full.
While Dyani and Nita ate, Claire and Nokomis went over sleeping arrangements and distributing Clan chores. Claire offered to share her hut with the two girls, that way Dyani would see Claire's routine and learn the ways of a Shaman first hand. Nokomis thought this was a great idea, and went to make Dakota a plate of food. He had been hunting all day and had probably worked up quite an appetite.
After they were done eating Claire showed Dyani and Nita her hut and where they would be sleeping, she also found them some fresh clothes to change into. The girls continued to be very quiet, Claire hoped they would start to feel comfortable soon. Then she took them on a tour of the village and the surrounding wooded area where paths had been cleared to reach various fishing and hunting spots, also where they could find sweet berries and other valuables to collect or trade. Claire showed them to the outhouses and showers next.
"Well, I'll leave you two to explore, shower, change or get ready bed, please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions."
The two women just nodded their heads yes and headed for the showers.
Claire pondered at why they were so shy. Perhaps Dakota would be able to get more from them. Thinking of which, where was Dakota, she was actually quite surprised they hadn't seen him on their tour. Where was he and what was he up to?

Chapter 3

-Nokomis Takes a Risk-
Nokomis immediately went to a field near by where she felt closest to the Creator and prayed. She prayed with everything she had. Her biggest fear was that Dakota didn't feel the same way about her. But if she wanted things to go further with Dakota she was going to have to tell him. Her life would either go one way or the other, but at least then she would know. When she felt absolutely sure she was ready she got up and made her way back to find Dakota.
When she got back to their Clan she was starving, so she found some fruit and a stick and decided to grill it over the campfire. It turned out super yummy. Although in the back of her mind she knew she was just stalling. OK, now to find Dakota, she headed to his hut and knocked.......no answer. Hmmmmmm...where could he be? On the way in she had walked by Claire's, but had only seen Claire outside meditating. In the front entrance of their village there was a fire ring for ceremonial dances and of course practicing such dances, maybe he was there.
Sure enough she heard him chanting and soon saw him dancing around a pretty big fire. He looked so handsome in the firelight, it highlighted his muscles and the features of his face. She could watch him all day. She didn't want to be rude and interrupt, so she sat on one of the logs near the fire and got lost in his dancing.
Dakota spotted her, but acted like he hadn't seen her, he was enjoying watching her watch him. She looked so beautiful sitting there, a beauty he hadn't seen until the last week or so. When he felt he had made her sit there long enough, he invited her to dance with him.  Instead of their traditional dance where they both danced side by side individually, he held out his hand and when she took it he pulled her close and rocked with her close to him. He was teaching her what he knew of to be a white man's dance, but it worked for the mood he was trying to set. He loved the way her body felt pressed against his. He looked down at her and met her gaze while she looked up at him. He took one of his hands from around her and cupped her cheek, she looked perfect right now. He slowly bent his head down and he felt her shift to stand on her toes, so their lips could meet. He kissed her her and she kissed him back. Their first kiss and it was amazing! All his worries seemed to melt away. As they slowly pulled apart, Nokomis started to speak, but he put a finger over her mouth and lightly kissed her again. Then he said, "Nokomis, I love you. Would you be willing to become my wife and have my children?" Nokomis couldn't speak she was so surprised, all she could do was nod her head. "Yes", she finally said, "yes Dakota, I love you too, and I would love to be your wife and to have your children. Dakota was so happy he picked her up and kissed her while he carried her to his hut, where his bed was waiting.
-Baby?-
Dakota woke up early the next morning and was quite happy to be able to roll over and have a nice warm body to cuddle up to. He kissed Nokomis' shoulder and rubbed his body against hers, hoping to get a response. Nokomis let out a soft moan and rolled to face Dakota. She looked into his eyes as she moved her hands down his body, she felt his hardness rub against her. She gently rolled him into his back, straddled him and got to some baby making' business.
A few weeks went by, Nokomis and Dakota spent almost every waking moment together, bonding and talking about their their plans for the future. Dakota talked of bringing other females and shamans, but didn't tell her exactly why.
Nokomis was becoming anxious, she couldn't wait to find out if she was going to have a baby. Dakota wanted to wait until she was pregnant to get married. Nokomis was okay with that arrangement, she just really wanted her life to begin. A child would bring meaning to her life, more than Dakota ever could. She spoke to Claire daily always asking if she could tell, but Claire couldn't. Claire couldn't tell one way or the other, but always told Nokomis to not give up hope. It was just too soon even for her.
About a month later, early in the morning Nokomis awoke with a horrible feeling in her stomach. She got up and had barely made it outside when her stomach gave a violent lurch and her dinner from the night before was suddenly coming out the same way it had gone in, however it tasted nothing like it the second time. Nokomis didn't feel well at all, she sat down in the dirt and waited for her stomach to settle. Meanwhile, Dakota went to fetch Claire, hopefully she had a tonic that would help Nokomis feel better.
When Claire saw Nokomis, she gently took her by the hand, helped her to her feet and brought Nokomis to her hut. She Nokomis sit on her bed. Claire gently touched Nokomis' belly and said "I feel life." "What? Really!" Exclaimed Nokomis. "Thank the Creator! Dakota will be so excited and we can get married now." Nokomis was overjoyed. "You must take care of yourself, no heavy lifting, and don't exhaust yourself" said Claire. "I won't" said Nokomis and she left to tell Dakota her happy news.
Nokomis found Dakota chopping wood. Dakota stopped,as she walked up. Nokomis ran up to him and placed a kiss on his tender lips. "What was that for?"asked Dakota smiling. "We're pregnant!" Exclaimed Nokomis. "Really? That's wonderful!" Dakota said as he picked her up and spun her around. "It's time to make our union official then. Tomorrw night, we'll have the ceremony" said Dakota. "I'll see you later tonight than my husband", teased Nokomis. "You sure will, my wife" was Dakota's response.

Chapter 2

-Thinking-
After the fight was over and he had returned to his tent for the night, he began thinking of his father and wondered what he should do next. He needed more males. One of the reasons he had went to Tribal Counsel was to seek their guidance and possibly their help in the matter, but they too were short on men. It was hard for all the clans, not just his, which was one of the reasons women were so easy to find. They just weren't producing males. Dakota hoped other tribes were going through the same thing, if they were to get attacked right now they'd all be screwed.

-Nokomis-
Nokomis came from a small band of women, the Head Woman being her older sister. She met Claire while gathering berries and other various fruits that grew near to their camp. Claire explained that they had a new Chief with no woman to become his wife. Nokomis agreed to go with her and meet her Chief and possibly her future husband. Claire also told her that Dakota had no other males to help him so he would probably expand their small clan into other villages.(Claire had seen a vision on how Dakota might be able to raise their small village into a large Clan that other clans could rely on for help, by it would require a very obedient and unjealous spouse who also thought of the Clan before herself) Nokomis said she would love to be the supporter of such a Chief. So Nokomis said her farewells to her sister and the other women, and they started their journey to her new home.

-The Meeting-
Claire introduced Dakota to Nokomis and left them to get to know each other. She would check in with Dakota later to tell him of her latest vision.
Dakota had to admit, there was nothing special about Nokomis' appearance, but as they got to talking about their interests and what they enjoyed in life, he starts to see why Claire had chosen her.
He took things slowly, his heart wad guarded and it would take him awhile to trust her completely.
In his free time, he started painting. It was a way for him to express how he was feeling and it helped get some of his hurting and anger out. Nokomis loved his paintings and she helped him with selling them to white folk for money and other goods. With the items they got from trading they started building huts and small chambers for eating and sleeping. They built tables, chairs, and even make shift beds. Dakota had never slept on anything but the ground, one night on a bed and he promised himself he would never sleep on the ground again.
Nokomis also had her own hut, but she found it lonely. She was used to having others around her while she slept, she had felt safer. Here she felt open and vulnerable. So she decided to go see the shaman about what she could do to earn Dakota's trust. When she got to Claire's hut however, no one was there.
-Claire's Vision-
Claire had gone to see Dakota to tell him about a possible way to make the clan bigger and better. When she got to Dakota's hut he was laying on his bed either meditating or sleeping. She knocked lightly just in case he was sleeping..."Dakota", she said softly. "Yes, Claire, enter please" came his response. Claire started telling him how he must put the welfare of the clan first, even before his own feelings. Dakota said yes, he had understood that from watching his father. Good, Claire said. "Dakota, I've had a vision on how you might be able to make this a very successful clan, but it will require you to break some traditional rules if you were to have a wife." Dakota motioned for her to continue. "Well, women are plenty in our Tribe, but not so plenty with men. There are two vacant smaller villages next to ours. I could search near by for available women and a shaman from their clan to accompany them. This would give you a better chance   at having sons and warriors for the clan AND the tribe." Dakota thought about it for a minute. "You mean reproduce with these other women? I haven't produced anything yet. Let's wait to see if I have a child first and go from there. Whoever I choose for a wife, isn't going to like this at all, but we do need warriors, without them we're sitting ducks for another Tribe or worse another Nation to take claim of."  Claire agreed to Dakota's plan and advised him to be as discreet as possible if and when these other women came along. Dakota agreed and bid her goodnight.
-Nokomis' Meeting with Claire-
Early the next morning Nokomis went to see Claire. When she got to Claire's hut she was outside talking to the vegetables and fruits in the garden. Claire spotted her out of the corner of her eye and noticed the inquisitive look on her face. "They grow better and produce more when you talk to them", explained Claire. "Oh, I see" said Nokomis. "Claire, I came to ask for your advice about Dakota, he doesn't trust me and I don't know how to show him or even tell him that I love him and that I want to be his wife." Claire smiled, took her hand and said, "if you tell him what you just told me, that should do the trick. Dakota has a lot on his mind, but hearing those words from you would take alot off of it." "Thank you so much Claire! I will go and pray to the Creator for the courage to tell him."

Chapter 1

This story is completely from my imagination and hold no known true facts.

 Dakota as Chief
Dakota's father was chief of the wolf clan. He died in battle along with all the other adult males of their clan against one of the tribe's many enemies. Dakota was his only child and just became an adult. His mother soon after hearing of her husband's death, took her own life, leaving Dakota an orphan and chief all in a weeks time.
The clan had very little to start off with, it was Dakota's duty and responsibility to repopulate to replace the warriors that were slain. He had his 2nd in command, Cameron, his 3rd in command Cheveyo, his betrothed Shanna, and their Shaman Claire. Dakota started finding goods to trade with other nearby clans for logs, supplies, and anything he thought would be useful. He did this with the help of the Shaman. Clan life was quiet, with no battles raging and no worries, but the Shaman warned him that this would not last for long.
-His Betrothed-
Dakota was unsure how to court his betrothed, Shanna, he was never taught the ways of a woman and a man so he came off a little shy and unsure of himself, which apparently was a turn off for his woman. She often left him standing, dumbfounded, confused and lost. One day when he came back from gathering wood for the fire, he caught Cheveyo and Shanna kissing and heading for Cheveyo's tent. Dakota waited patiently but was very angered by Cheveyo's betrayal and even more so by that of Shanna, HIS betrothed. As soon as they emerged from the tent he had them both exhiled and made it clear they should be grateful he wasn't going to execute them.
-Speaking with the Shaman-
Claire was like a mother to Dakota, she told him all things that she saw, and he often sought her out to help him sort out his troubles. Claire kept nothing from him, even the most troubling of visions. She told him that Cameron his his 2nd in command would rival him to become chief because he thought he was better suited. Dakota told her he would head the warning and watch Cameron closely.

Claire would also take trips to the other clans in search of a woman to become Dakota's wife. Claire was very peculiar about what sort of woman to bring back, and in time she found one, Nokomis. She wasn't the most beautiful on the outside, but she had a beautiful soul, and a kind heart.
Meanwhile, her prophecy about Cameron came true. Dakota headed him talking behind his back at a Tribal Counsel meeting, about how he didn't blame his betrothed for betraying him. When Dakota heard this his blood boiled, and it took everything in him not to say something then and there. But Tribal Counsel meetings were not a place to settle Clan disputes, so he waited until they were back in the village to settle tho matter.
-The Fight-
Clan law states that if another male who is not of the previous chief's blood, wishes  to be chief he must beat the current cheif twice in a row.
Dakota having no woman to distract him had been sparring and wrestling with the other males of hereby clans, shop he felt ready to defend his honor and his birthright. Cameron on the other hand, was lazy and ogled any female that wondered by. An outsider who didn't care either way was the referee. On the count of three the match started, at first it was anybody's fight. Cameron would throw a punch, Dakota would fall, bit he would get right back up and Cameron a taste of his own medicine. Soon when Cameron would throw a punch, Dakota would dodge and counter with a punch and a kick to Cameron's stomach. Cameron was soon winded and with one last blow from Dakota, Cameron was down. They're was a brief intermission between fights so that both parties could catch their breath, settle their nerves and fought somewhat refreshed. The second round didn't last that long, Dakota won with a good solid punch to Cameron's face and knocked him flat on his back, Dakota stood over him and told him to leave and never show his face around his clan again!
